Care Information

Caridina shrimp are more sensitive than Neocaridina species and are best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists. Stable water parameters are essential for their health and breeding success.

Care Parameter Recommended Range
Temperature 68–74°F (20–23°C)
pH 6.0–6.8
Hardness (GH) 4–6
Hardness (KH) 0–2
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 120–160 ppm
Minimum Tank Size 10 gallons

Water: Use reverse osmosis (RO) water remineralized with a Caridina-specific mineral supplement (e.g. Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+) to achieve stable, soft, slightly acidic conditions.

Substrate: Use a buffering shrimp substrate (e.g. ADA Amazonia or similar) to maintain low pH and KH naturally.

Filtration: Sponge filters are ideal — gentle flow protects juveniles and promotes biofilm growth.

Diet: Feed a balanced diet of high-quality shrimp food, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein treats. Biofilm and mosses provide excellent natural grazing.

Acclimatization: Upon arrival, drip acclimate your shrimp over 30–60 minutes before introducing them to your tank. Avoid sudden temperature or parameter changes.

Ideal Tank Mates

Compatible Avoid
Peaceful micro fish (micro rasboras, small tetras) Aggressive or predatory fish (cichlids, bettas)
Nerite snails, Amano shrimp Crayfish or large invertebrates
Other Caridina shrimp Large, boisterous fish

Breeding

With stable water conditions and dense plant cover or moss, Crystal shrimp will breed readily. Females carry eggs for 3–4 weeks before fully formed juveniles emerge. Maintain soft, slightly acidic water and provide plenty of hiding spots for young shrimp.
